NJ Shooting Suspect Waited For Cop

(Jersey City, NJ) — Authorities say the suspect in a New Jersey cop’s shooting was lying in wait for police officers. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says Officer Melvin Santiago was ambushed by Lawrence Campbell, who had taken a gun from a Walgreen’s security guard Sunday morning.

Fulop says after snatching the guard’s gun, Campbell waited at the Walgreen’s for officers to arrive. He shot Santiago through his squad car’s windshield. Fulop also said Campbell didn’t try robbing the store and no customers were hurt. Witnesses told police Campbell said they should pay attention because he would be famous soon. Police said Campbell tried shooting two other officers, but neither of them were injured.
