Obama Meets With Dalai Lama

(Washington, DC) — President Obama is meeting this morning with the Dalai Lama . The meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader comes as the U.S. is raising concerns about the human rights situation in China. The White House is urging the Chinese government to resume talks with the Dalai Lama as a way to reduce growing tensions in Tibetan areas of the country.
China is protesting the President’s meeting. The Chinese Foreign Ministry called it a “gross interference” in China’s internal affairs and warned that it could seriously damage relations between the countries. The Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet.
