Officials: Drug-Resistant Strain Of Gonorrhea Possibly Started In Hawaii

(San Francisco, CA) — Officials believe a new drug-resistant strain of gonorrhea may have begun in San Francisco or possibly somewhere in Hawaii. The “San Francisco Examiner” says the Department of Public Health began tracking the new strand in 2006 and narrowed down the point of origin as either California or the Aloha State, believing it most likely began in San Francisco. According to public health officials, cases of the STD have been on the rise in gay men and African-American youth, with more than two-thousand cases reported in San Francisco last year. More than 700-thousand Americans were diagnosed with gonorrhea in 2011, an infection that can lead to infertility and may also aid or speed up the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
