State Department Applauds Ukraine Deal With EU

(Washington, DC) — State Department spokesperson Marie Harf is applauding Ukraine’s new deal with the European Union.

The deal sets up a free trade zone in Ukraine. It’s the same agreement that Ukraine’s former president abandoned late last year in favor of closer ties to Russia. That set off months of deadly violence that ended when the pro-Russia president fled the country earlier this year. Russia responded by sending troops into Ukraine’s Crimea region and annexing it in March. Ukraine also accuses Moscow of stirring up pro-Russian rebellion in Eastern Ukraine.
