ISP Plan Memorial Day Weekend Safety Blitz - May 24, 2013 10:51:03 am

By Jake Griffin

(Undated) - For many, summer has just begun, and Troopers with the Indiana State Police are taking an active role in traffic safety. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers not following posted speed limits, following too closely, making unsafe lane changes, and failing to buckle up themselves and children in need of restraints. The Indiana State Police officers will also be on the lookout for impaired drivers.

Next weekend the State Police and the Dearborn County Sheriff Department will be participating in the “Click it or Ticket” the National Highway Traffic campaign aimed at increasing the use of seat belts among young people in the United States.

Motorists are reminded to make sure they are well rested before traveling. Also, to avoid tailgating and following of the two-second rule. Drivers are urged to make sure all vehicle passengers are buckled up at all times.

This reminder comes as the Memorial Day weekend approaches and the unofficial start of summer begins.

(Cincinnati, Oh.) - A man who admitted to causing an Ohio River boating accident that killed another man and injured a woman was sentenced Thursday.

Glenn Riegelsberger pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault.

Prosecutors said Riegelsberger was drunk when he drove his boat over the top of another vessel on the Ohio River near Riverside Park in Sedamsville last June 9. The crash killed the driver of the other boat, Jeffrey Foster, and seriously injured Foster’s passenger Jennifer Holwadel. Witnesses said Riegelsberger's boat was going too fast in the no-wake zone where the crash occurred.

Riegelsberger left the scene of the crash. He drove his boat to shore, got out, and ran away on foot.

The 54-year-old was sentenced to four years in prison, followed by five years on probation. He must also pay $100,000 in restitution to Holwadel, who suffered a broken back.

Lawmakers Want Answers On ISTEP Debacle - May 24, 2013 8:09:24 am

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana state lawmakers say they will have a hearing to study the problems with this year's ISTEP+ test.

The Indiana Legislative Council met Thursday to decide which issues will be looked at during summer study committees, the Associated Press reports.

Schools statewide had to extend the online testing period and reduce the number of students taking the test at one time because of a glitch in the test provider CTB/McGraw Hill's servers earlier this month. As lawmakers seek answers, representatives from CTB/McGraw Hill, the Indiana Department of Education and school superintendents could be required to testify.

“It’s worthy of a strong look to get straight answers, to make sure we get to the bottom of it,” said House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) told the Associated Press.

Other issues that will get a look over the summer are land banks used to sell vacant property, how casino communities use their gaming revenues, and Common Core education standards.

CSX Railroad crews are replacing railroad ties and replacing railroad crossings. The City of Lawrenceburg says that the North side of Williams Street will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday starting May 28 through June 7.

(Ripley County, Ind.) - A court hearing will take place Friday for an Ohio teen accused in the murder of a Milan woman last year.

Nancy Hershman, 68, was gunned down in her home during a botched burglary early in the morning December 30. Three people have been accused in her murder: 22-year-old Alison Moore and two teenage boys, all from Colerain Township, Hamilton County.

One of the boys, 15-year-old Sean David Nichols, has already been bound over to adult court in Ripley County to face charges of Murder and Burglary. The judge made that decision March 7.

The second teen is a 16-year-old only identified so far by his initials D.H. He has a hearing in Ripley County Juvenile Court Friday to determine if he’ll be charged as an adult, too.

D.H.’s first appearance in juvenile court April 16 was recessed.

The trio had driven to the Milan area from Ohio. They allegedly broke into and robbed one residence late on December 29 before driving to Hershman’s home on West Ellis Street. They allegedly broke in and were confronted by the widow, who investigators say confronted the burglars before Moore shot her.

(Bright, Ind.) - A non-profit organization based in Bright is planning to go to Oklahoma and help with the cleanup effort after Monday’s destructive tornado.

Hands and Feet Ministry President Jacob Mansfield says he will be among 11 individuals from Dearborn County leaving for Moore, Oklahoma next Tuesday, May 28. They will remain there until May 31 helping clear debris and providing basic supplies.

“Last year we went to Marysville (which was struck by a tornado) and helped with the cleanup. This is part of a bigger goal for Hands and Feet to have a disaster relief team to send out anytime something like this happens,” Mansfield said.

The group is requesting donations of supplies to help in their mission. Items can be dropped off at The Gathering Place Coffee House located at 1932 Jamison Road in Bright.

Requested supplies include work gloves, vinyl gloves, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, cooling cloths, hats, safety glasses, masks, heavy duty trash bags, tarps, rope, paper towels, toilet paper, basic first aid kits, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, lip balm, cleaning wipes, plastic storage containers, and shelter tents for shade.

The organization also needs help in getting to Oklahoma. Monetary donations for transportation costs can be given through the Hands and Feet Ministry website at www.HFMinistry.org and clicking the “Donate Now” button. Gas cards can be dropped off at The Gathering Place.

Mansfield says he is hopeful that a local store can donate non-perishable foods. He noticed in Maryville that FEMA and the Red Cross provided plenty of water and other essentials, but people still desired canned goods.

Hands and Feet Ministry was founded in 2011 by Mansfield. He says the organization does a lot of good in Dearborn County by frequently participating in community projects on the weekend. Mansfield can be contacted by phone at (513) 340-1793, through the website www.HFMinistry.org, or the Hands and Feet Ministry Facebook page.

Mansfield noted that The Gathering Place Coffee House is not currently open for business, but plans to welcome the public sometime this summer.

Freedom Hope Fans Line Up For Te'o Gag Gift - May 23, 2013 7:57:45 am

The empty box that will be given away on Manti Te'o Girlfreind Bobblehead night at the Florence Freedom's home game Thursday, May 23.

(Florence, Ky.) - The Florence Freedom minor league baseball team made national headlines earlier this year when they announced a peculiar bobblehead giveaway.

At Thursday night’s game at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium, the team will give away Manti Te’o girlfriend bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans through the gate.

The story of the former Notre Dame linebacker’s nonexistent girlfriend inspired the organization’s idea. The joke: the bobblehead box will be empty.

"This will be the best kind of bobblehead a fan could get," Freedom General Manager Josh Anderson said when the attention-grabbing promotion was announced in January. "Because now fans can make the bobblehead out to be whatever they want it to be."

Taking the gag a little further, the team has also reserved a section of seating down the left field line for fans with imaginary friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, or spouses. Additionally, there will be an air guitar contest, a pretend kiss cam, and an imaginary food fight.

Gates open at 5:35 p.m. with first pitch against the visiting Schaumburg Bombers slated for 6:35.

Thursday night Freedom home games are $1 beer night. Tonight’s game will feature a postgame concert by Folsom.

Legion Bringing Back Memorial Day Parade May 27 - May 23, 2013 7:39:00 am

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The Lawrenceburg American Legion Post 239 wants the community to remember that Memorial Day is not about barbecues and swimming pools. It’s about those who gave their lives defending the country.

After not having it last year due to lack of interest in prior years, the legion is bringing back its Memorial Day Parade this coming Monday, May 27. Legion member Mick McNimery said the parade will be a scaled down from what it once was.

“We need to get the people out to line the streets. It’s not who or what is in the parade. It’s why we have the parade,” McNimery said.

The parade will start at 10:00 a.m. Monday, with a shorter route only proceeding down Walnut Street in Lawrenceburg. In 2011, only about 20 people come out to wave to the veterans riding in the parade, McNimery recalled.

“It also shows support for the troops that are out there today. These young men and woman are in some cases on their fourth or fifth deployments. Their families sacrifice a lot. In a way, the parade shows support for them, too,” said McNimery.

If this year’s parade is considered a success, then the legion could expand it in 2014.

The public is also invited to a post-parade Memorial Day Service at the veterans area of the Greendale Cemetery. Dearborn Circuit Court Judge James D. Humphrey will deliver a speech and Buddy Foster will read the poem “Freedom Isn’t Free.”
