1 Dead After Cincinnati Highway Overpass Collapses
(Cincinnati, Oh.) – One person is dead and another is injured after a highway overpass collapsed in Cincinnati.
City manager Harry Black says it all started with a construction project, but an investigation is underway.
“It’s an industrial incident, a workplace incident, with respect to a construction crew that’s doing work out here. Something went wrong and a tragedy has occurred as a result,” said Black.
According to police, a construction worker was killed when an overpass on Interstate 75 came crashing down. A semi-truck driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the collapse occurred around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Officials believe it could be around 48 hours before I-75 southbound at Hopple Street is re-opened because of several hundred tons of concrete on the pavement.
“We have a piece of heavy equipment, a bridge collapse, and we do have one deceased. So we’re going to be dealing with that and making the appropriate notifications as well as doing the best we can to try to get the freeway opened,” said Cincinnati Chief of Police Jeffery Blackwell.
