(Burlington, Ky.) – Most kids want a new doll, video game, bike, or other like items for their birthday.

All Laurel Vogt wants for her 10th birthday is to help out animals in need. That’s why she’s asking for would be gift-givers to instead make a contribution to the Boone County Animal Shelter.

“She made this decision on her own and she is so excited about it. I could not be more proud,” said Laurel’s mother, Ryan Vogt.

Vogt, a 4th grader at Burlington Elementary School, wants the friends and family attending her birthday party on Saturday to instead bring items such as dog toys, bleach, paper towels, wash cloths, towels, canned dog and cat food, dry dog and cat food, kitty litter, collars, blankets, and leashes. Laurel will take the items to the shelter.

“A lot of my friends actually liked the idea and said they were excited, too,” Laurel told Eagle 99.3 Wednesday morning.

Does she want anything for herself for her birthday?

“Not really. Well, maybe a puppy,” Laurel said.

Good for her! More adults and children should donate to shelters, or help by adopting an animal or volunteering at the shelter!
