(Milan, Ind.) – When new ISTEP+ testing data was released by the Indiana Department of Education on Monday, administrators and staff at Milan Community Schools were very pleased with what they saw.

Milan Community Schools placed 21st out of 302 schools with 86.4 percent of 3rd through 8th graders passing both the math and English/Language Arts portions of the standardized test in the spring of 2014.

Credit was given to the teaching staff, administrators, instructional assistants and students by Milan schools superintendent Paul Ketcham.

“As we continue to use formative assessment and data to drive instruction we are confident we will continue to meet the individual needs of all our students,” Ketcham said. “While we are happy our ISTEP scores and they are some of the best in the state, we also take a lot of pride doing the right thing for our students. Our teachers provide so much more in the classrooms than just test preparation and I am proud of them for that.”

The feat was even more impressive considering how far the school came to achieve the high pass rate. Milan schools saw a 14.3 percent increase – the best in the state – from the previous year. ISTEP scores at Milan Elementary and Milan Middle schools were up 13.5 and 15.4 percent, respectively.

Ketcham chalked up the improvement to the school corporation’s educators continuing to grow, innovate, and get better for students.

“The challenge now will be to continue to improve and become a K-12 community of learners, both staff and students,” he said.

Looking statewide, 74.7 percent of students statewide passed both the math and English portions of the test. That’s an improvement of one percent from last year. Among Indiana students, 80.7 percent passed English/Language Arts, up from 79.5 percent in 2013. In Math, 83.5 percent passed, up from 83.0 percent in 2013.

“This year, we saw yet another increase in student performance indicated through ISTEP,” said Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz. “I want to congratulate Indiana’s students, parents, teachers and administrators for all their hard work this past year. These increased scores are just one sign of the great learning that is happening in Indiana Schools.”

The Indiana Department of Education will use a new standardized test for the 2014-2015 school year as the state adapts to new federal requirements. Another new test will debut in the 2015-2016 school year.

Outside of the two Milan schools, other local schools with a greater than five percent improvement in passing both subjects include Jac-Cen-Del Junior-Senior High School (8.0 percent), Brookville Elementary School (6.4), Greendale Middle School (6.3), Laurel Elementary School (6.3), South Dearborn Middle School (5.8), and Sunman-Dearborn Intermediate School (5.1). Among private schools, St. Paul Catholic School in Guilford with its small enrollment saw a 23 percent increase from last year while St. Mary School in Aurora improved 9.1 percent and St. Nicholas School in Sunman was up by 5.6 percent.

Batesville Community Schools did not have any school achieve a big increase in test success, but the district continues to maintain an exceptional pass rate at 88.8 percent, good for 11th best in the state.

Some schools experienced significant drops in their overall ISTEP+ pass rate.  Moores Hill Elementary (-6.7), St. Lawrence School in Lawrenceburg (-6.6) Mount Carmel School (-6.2), and Sunman Elementary School (-5.4).
