(Versailles, Ind.) – Fall may not be in the air yet, but footballs certainly are.

Most southeast Indiana high school teams held their first practices Monday, the first day non-pad practices were allowed under Indiana High School Athletic Association rules. The high school regular season will kick off in Indiana on Friday, August 22.

But high school footballers aren’t the only ones hitting the practice field. So are pee wee players.

The Southeast Indiana Youth Football Association 4th grade Sunman Trojans players and their families were invited to a campout at Versailles State Park organized by coach Rand Ballart – son of East Central High School 1994 state champion head coach Rod Ballart – this past weekend.

The group getaway served as a preseason training camp with conditioning and team building activities. Ballart has shared video of the team running through the state park woods. They also watched movies at night.

The young team’s practice has shown up as great game results. The 4th graders had their second undefeated season in the SIYFA and second super bowl title in a row. Ballart says that since 2nd grade the team is 16-0 in the SIYFA and 36-3 overall with outside league tourneys and non-league games.

Ballart says the team was champions of the Greensburg Tournament last season defeating the Mid-Indiana All-Stars by 20 points. The All-Stars were comprised of hand-picked kids from Indianapolis, Shelbyville and Columbus.

The Trojans will play their first games of the season at the Oak Hills Gridiron Tournament this weekend, August 8-10. The team won that tournament last year. The squad’s first Indiana game is at home against Rushville on August 23.
