(Aurora, Ind.) – The South Dearborn High School’s Opening Knight Show Choir has long been one of the area’s best school choirs.
But this year’s group is accomplishing feats that no other choir at South Dearborn or other area school has before. The 2016 Opening Knight Show Choir has captured six grand championships at all six choir competitions they have participated in so far this season.
Opening Knight has also won four outstanding combo band awards, four outstanding choreography awards, four outstanding vocal awards, and two outstanding stage crew awards.
“We sing well and we dance well, and that’s very important. But, they get along this year. We have great senior leadership,” says director Justin Selmeyer, explaining the group’s keys to success.
“We all feel like a family when we are together. It just feels right and it’s easy to perform with these people,” says singer Olivia Bowers.
Lots of practice goes into making a championship show choir. Opening Knight members attend a camp in July then take a choir-related classes in the first and second trimesters. There are also weekly evening rehearsals.
The preparation shows in all the hardware the choir has brought back to Aurora.
“It’s beyond the winning aspect of everything. It’s being able to look at the audience’s face as your performing for them. It’s just like seeing the adoration like ‘Wow. I want to be on stage with them and be able to do that,’” says student and show choir member Bobby Mangold.
The South Dearborn Opening Knight Show Choir has one more competition this season. It will be at Shelbyville on March 12.
South Dearborn High School hosts a competition including 20 show choirs this Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5. While Opening Knight will perform Saturday at 5:15 p.m., they cannot compete because they are the host school. The public is welcome. There is an admission fee.
