(Verona, Ky.) – A toddler died in a mobile home fire in Verona Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1800 block of Roberts Road in Gallatin County at about 3:00 p.m.

The mother and a three-year-old sibling were able to make it out safely, but the woman’s 23-month-old son was trapped in heavy smoke and flames. He had been sleeping in his crib.

Once out, the mother ran to a neighbor’s home to find her husband and for help. When they returned, the trailer was fully engulfed.

The first firefighters and police on scene attempted to make it into the home to reach the child but were unsuccessful. The flames were just too intense.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is believed to have originated in the mobile home’s furnace area.
