image(Dillsboro, Ind.) – A brazen theft was recently committed at a local cemetery.

A flagpole was donated to the Oakdale Cemetery from Dillsboro American Legion Post 292 in honor veterans buried there. That large flagpole was noticed to be missing earlier this month, says Dillsboro Chief of Police Ryan Brandt.

The 50 to 60 foot pole eight inches in diameter was cut and taken sometime on or before September 17. The theft was reported to Brandt’s department on September 23.

The chief says the thief, or thieves, more than likely turned the pole in scrap yards in exchange for cash. Brandt has been reaching out to scrap metal dealers in the area in hopes of finding those responsible.

There are no suspects at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

Anybody with information on the flag pole theft should contact the Dillsboro Police Department at (812) 432-3033.

Oakdale Cemetery is located on Beatty Road just of U.S. 50 in Dillsboro.
