(Florence, Ind.) – A Thursday morning house fire is under investigation in Switzerland County.

A fire was reported at an abandoned home on the 12300 block of Crystal Drive at around 4:30 a.m., and may have been burning a while before that. East Enterprise Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Darling says the home was fully involved even before firefighters got the call to respond.

Nobody was hurt. Firefighters remained on the scene until 6:30 putting out the flames.

A cause of the blaze is undetermined because of the total destruction of the home.

People have been known to squat in abandoned homes in that area of Switzerland County, Darling says, but he couldn’t say for sure if that was the case at this particular home.

“We’ve got neighbors that say there are people living in and out of those houses,” Darling says.

The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office and Switzerland County Emergency Rescue assisted firefighters at the scene.
