American Legion Names Kathleen Daugherty 2017 K-6 Educator Of The Year

(Vevay, Ind.) – Another Switzerland County educator has earned a prestigious award from the American Legion Department of Indiana.

Kathleen Daugherty, of Vevay, was recently named the 2017 K-6 Educator of the Year by the American Legion 9th District.

Each year, the American Legion recognizes three educators, one each from the elementary, middle and high school levels. Each winner is judged based on their career, community service, family involvement and letters of recognition.

Daugherty has taught in Switzerland County for 33 years. She started at Switzerland County Elementary as a second-grade teacher in 1986. Two years later, she moved to Jefferson Craig Elementary School as a fourth-grade teacher, where she remains today.

Outside of teaching, Daugherty has coached girls basketball and volleyball at Jefferson Craig Elementary.

Daugherty has also had an influence on several extracurricular activities such as: Science Fair Coordinator, Nursing Home School Program Coordinator, and Hurricane Andrew Fundraiser Coordinator.

“When learning is fun, it is remembered and those memories last a lifetime,” Daugherty said.

As Educator of the Year, Dennis has received a $500 grant to her school from the American Legion Department of Indiana.
