(Boone County, Ky.) – The final student day at Boone County schools Tuesday won’t be without controversy.

The organization Tri-State Freethinkers will distribute copies of The Young Atheist’s Survival Guide, a book by Hemant Mehta, at the district’s high schools as students leave the school and begin their summer breaks. The group is partnering with The Secular Student Alliance for the distribution.

The freethinkers organization says it made the decision to hand out the atheist publication after Gideons International received approval to hand out Bibles at public right-of-ways near the schools, according to Fox 19. Gideons will also be handing out their books Tuesday afternoon.

With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, the atheist organization received approval from the Boone County School Board on May 8 to hand out the books promoting “Humanism”. Tri-State Freethinkers says that under the Equal Access Act of 1984, the schools must allow other groups to distribute their literature as well.
