(Batesville, Ind.) – A home security industry website says two local cities are among the safest in Indiana.

SafeWise.com used 2012 FBI crime data and its own research to analyze and rank its list of 50 Safest Cities in Indiana. The list only includes cities with a population of 5,000 or more.

“We analyzed the number of Violent Crimes, consisting of aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery, as well as Property Crimes, consisting of arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft,” wrote the rankings’ author Alexia Chianis.

Batesville ranked 28th on the list with just 21.44 property crimes per 1,000 people and 2.6 violent crimes per 1,000.

Lawrenceburg was 32nd with 26.65 property crimes per 1,000.  Violent crime was rare with just under one crime per 1,000.

“I discovered Indiana’s safe cities are quite diverse but do share a few key characteristics that make them stand out,” Chianis said. “They all have a strong sense of community pride, impressive public safety initiatives, and top-notch municipal services.”

Zionsville topped the list to earn the designation as Indiana’s safest city. The city was followed by Bargersville and Decatur. The full Indiana rankings can be found online at http://www.safewise.com/blog/50-safest-cities-indiana/.
