(Bright, Ind.) - It was emotional scene at Bright Christian Church Thursday as two families of assistant chief Tom Stevens, Sr. came together to mourn his passing.
There were his related family shedding tears and sharing memories. His first responder brothers and sisters from Bright and across the tri-state did the same.
“My brother, we lay thee now to rest. We loved thee here and our remembrance of thee shall always be pleasant,” said Kevin McKinney, Bright EMS chief and Stevens’ nephew.
Fellow Bright firefighter and EMT Dave Nash said the members of the department won’t miss a beat helping people because of what they learned from Stevens.
“He’s looking down at us right now and he’s watching the tremendous things that are happening in his absence and in his honor. We are actually representing everything he taught us over the years. He’s so proud of us and he knows we are ready to live on as a community and he can sleep well. He’s moved on to be with God,” Nash said in his eulogy of Stevens.
Stevens died of a heart attack at the age of 59 on Monday, just a couple hours after returning home from an emergency call late Sunday night.
Residents lined the streets to view the funeral procession as it wound through town from Bright Christian Church to Stevens’ final resting place at Gibson Cemetery. Video of the funeral procession and a slideshow from the funeral are below:
