(Dearborn County, Ind.) – Dearborn County Republicans will caucus next week to select a new county council member.

District 3 Councilman Maynard Barrett died Thursday, June 5 after a battle with cancer at age 75. The Auroran had first been elected to county council in 2006.

Republican precinct committee members in Council District 3 will caucus Saturday, June 28, says Dearborn County Republican Party Chairwoman Lynn Deddens. Each committee person will cast a vote for one of the available candidates.

According to Deddens, the person chosen will not only fill the remainder of Barrett’s second term through the end of this year, but they will also replace him as the Republican candidate on the November 2014 ballot. Barrett won the May 6 Republican primary over Vicki Hon, 57-to-43 percent.

Kevin Turner is the Democrat candidate in the District 3 council race. He won the primary unopposed.

Regardless of who wins the caucus and election, they will have big shoes to fill when taking Barrett’s position, said Deddens.

Candidates interested in being considered at the caucus must file a declaration of candidacy form at the Dearborn County Clerk of Courts office at the county courthouse at least 72 hours prior to the June 28 caucus. A candidate must reside in District 3.

Deddens said she has heard of three people interested in filling the vacancy, but no forms have been filed as of Tuesday.
