(St. Paul, Ind.) – A Cincinnati man died after jumping into a Shelby County rock quarry Thursday.

Indiana Conservation Officers say Ryan L. Hester jumped from 30 feet high into the water at the White Rock Park located in St. Paul.

Hester and a friend had jumped from a platform designed for just one person, officers said. He landed awkwardly on a rope marking the landing area in the water, which may be a factor in his death.

Divers with the Indiana State Police and Indiana Conservation Officers recovered Hester’s body. The Shelby County Coroner pronounced him dead at around 6:00 p.m.

The incident is still under investigation.

Indiana Conservation Officers encourage the use of personal flotation devices or lifejackets to reduce the risk of injury or drowning.
