(Ripley County, Ind.) – Buckle up. Police in Indiana begin a three week seat belt enforcement blitz Friday.

More than 250 police agencies across the state are taking park in the Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization May 12 through June 4. The Franklin and Ripley Counties Traffic Safety Partnership is among them.

“Wearing your seat belt, either as a driver or passenger, is the essential beginning for staying safe on the road,” said Batesville Police Lieutenant Doug Wolfer, coordinator for the partnership. “Increasing public awareness and heightening enforcement through our participation in this campaign is a great way to boost the importance of seat belt safety.  If you are unbelted, we will pull you over.”

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute reports 827 people were killed last year on Indiana roadways. Of those, 36 percent were not wearing seatbelts.

Federal funds are paying for the Click It or Ticket campaign.
