(Vevay, Ind.) – A Switzerland County High School football player remains in the hospital recovering from a hit that left him unable to move or feel his legs.
Freshman Colton Schirmer suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck when he was hit during last Friday night’s game at North Decatur.
An update from Pacers head coach Ryan this week says Colton is in good spirits and some muscles in his legs are twitching. However, swelling in his neck has not fully subsided.
The teen could be moved from the intensive care unit at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis to a rehabilitation facility by next week.
Switzerland County’s football team will play at home Friday night against Milan. Citing Colton’s wishes, the high school has asked that fans attending that game wear red, white, and blue. #ColtonStrong shirts will be available for purchase.
A GoFundMe page set up by Jesop has so far raised about $2,600 toward a $5,000 goal. Friends, community members, and even other football programs have been making contributions. The money will help the Schirmer family with medical expenses.
At Colton’s request, the theme for the senior night football game Friday vs. Milan will be RED, WHITE, AND BLUE! Kickoff is @ 7!
