(Dearborn County, Ind.) – The truck driver involved in a crash that shut down State Road 1 in Dearborn County says he veered off the roadway to avoid a vehicle.

The Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department says the driver of the truck, Jason Leach, 46, of Iowa, was not hurt in the crash which occurred near Perfect North Slopes just before midnight Monday. However, several of the 77 hogs aboard the truck were seriously injured and had to be euthanized.

After the wreck, Leach told deputies he was driving southbound on S.R. 1 when a northbound vehicle crossed into his lane. He claimed he drove off the highway to avoid hitting that vehicle, causing the truck to overturn.

Leach was not injured in the wreck.

The crash forced State Road 1 to be closed for 11 hours Tuesday morning, not reopening until about 11:00 a.m.

Bright Veterinary Clinic and the Miller-York Fire Department assisted at the crash scene.
