(West Harrison, Ind.) – After nearly four decades with East Central High School football as a player and coach, Tim Behlmer is calling it a career.

Behlmer, 57, tells Eagle 99.3 he retired as the school’s head football coach on Friday.

“You get to a certain age and you realize that ‘Wow, I am getting older and there are things we want to do that we just could not while coaching football.’ It has been great. I will miss certain things, but it is a young man’s game,” the 2012 EIAC Football Coach of the Year said.

Although he won’t be pacing the sidelines on Friday nights any longer, the coach will continue to teach. Behlmer said he plans to remain in the classroom for another two or three years and oversee the high school’s weight room during that time.

Behlmer – a former player captain for the first-ever East Central football team in 1974 before going on to play defensive end at the University of Cincinnati – was a coach or assistant with the Trojans football program for 34 years.

He recently completed his sixth year as a high school football coach in Indiana, all with East Central, compiling a career record of 41 wins and just 14 losses with two sectional championships.

There were many memorable moments in his football career at East Central. He was on the staff of the 1994 state championship team, one of his highlights.

“But all in all the highlight for us would be all the great young men that I have had the pleasure of coaching and working with. I realized along time ago that the game is about the kids. Watching them grow from frosh to senior not just physically but more importantly as solid young men. We love it when a young man from 1982 comes back and talks about ECfootball and what the program and coaches were to him during the years,” the coach said.

Behlmer said he also takes pride in his role building what one of the top high school football programs over 35 years in the state and tri-state area.

“Well it could’t get any better. Remember the Trojan Tradition will always live on in its past, present and future East Central football players.”

Behlmer coached the Trojans from 1999 to 2004, before leaving the program temporarily. He rejoined EC as an assistant under coach Don Stonefield and became head coach once again for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
