Emergency Closure For Milton-Madison Bridge
(Madison, Ind.) – The Milton-Madison Bridge is closed, because a beam on the U.S. 421 bridge over the Ohio River shifted overnight.
That bearing between the bridge and a pier dislodged at around 3:00 a.m.
A construction worker was injured in the incident. That worker, who was not hurt seriously, was taken to a local hospital.
Kentucky State Police have barricaded both ends of the bridge as crews inspect it. Project officials say the bridge will be closed until further notice.
Motorists are advised to use as detours either the Markland Dam Bridge to the north or the Interstate 65 John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville to the south.
The Milton-Madison Bridge has been under construction for three years. It was slated to close for seven days starting this Friday, March 14 as the entire 2,428-foot-long bridge was to be slid from temporary piers onto refurbished permanent piers. As of this report, it is unclear how the suspected beam shift might affect that schedule.
