(Switzerland County, Ind.) – A Ripley County man died when a tree fell on top of him Tuesday morning in Switzerland County.

The sheriff’s department says a 911 call was made at about 11:18 a.m. for an incident on property adjacent to Drakes Ridge Road in Pleasant Township. The report stated a man was injured when a tree had fallen and pinned him underneath.

Richard E. Hunter, of Osgood, was pronounced deceased at the accident scene at 11:48 AM by Switzerland County Coroner Lewis Fritter.

According to Sheriff Roy Leap, Hunter was working for a logging company based out of Batesville. It is believed that Hunter had attempted to cut a tree down and prior to it falling to the ground it got hung up by another tree. Mr. Hunter then attempted to cut down another tree which was possibly holding the falling tree from coming to the ground safely.

“When Mr. Hunter moved around the tree for his final cut, the original cut tree shifted and fell to the ground striking and pinning Mr. Hunter,” Leap said.

The death is being investigated as an accident, the sheriff said.

Other units assisting at the scene were members of the East Enterprise Fire Department, Moorefield Fire Department and Switzerland County EMS.
