image(Undated) – That turkey, stuffing, cranberries and other Thanksgiving dinner fixings should cost less this year.

The Indiana Farm Bureau has released the results of its annual Thanksgiving meal cost survey. It indicates that the average cost for a typical Thanksgiving meal for 10 people will cost $48.12. That number is down almost three dollars from last year, when the meal survey was at an all-time high of $51.05.

“The cost of this year’s meal, at less than $5 per serving, remains an excellent value for consumers,” said Isabella Chism, Indiana Farm Bureau second vice president. “Indiana’s farm families are honored to produce the food for family Thanksgiving celebrations.”

The meal survey includes turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and both coffee and milk. The items were bought in quantities large enough to serve a family of 10 with some leftovers.

The price of the turkey – the priciest item of the meal – has decreased just a couple cents to about $1.44 per pound.

“Slightly higher turkey production for much of the year coupled with an increase in birds in cold storage may be responsible for the moderate price decrease our shoppers reported,” said John Anderson, deputy chief economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Several items did experience price increases from last year. Stuffing was up 21 cents, sweet potatoes up 15 cents, cranberries were up eight cents, pumpkin pie filling up four cents, and other ingredients to prepare the meal – such as eggs, milk, flour, sugar – were up just two cents to $3.20.
