(Aurora, Ind.) – A scrap metal scavenger is accused of reaching a little too far in his search for a payday.

Steve Horsley, 38, is charged with Theft (Class D felony) and Probation Violation (Class C felony) for a January 7 incident at a home on Lincoln Street in Aurora.

According to a court affidavit, an Aurora Police officer was called to the home by the female homeowner. As she was driving down the street from her home, the homeowner saw Horsley dragging her grill across her driveway. The woman then drove up to Horsley’s truck and confronted him.

Horsley allegedly told officers that he was picking up scrap metal and though that the victim’s grill was garbage. He added that he did not go to the door to ask about the grill because he is on probation and cannot knock on the door as part of that probation.

In the affidavit, the investigating officer wrote that drag marks could be seen leading to the grill sitting next to Horsley’s truck. Trash cans were also observed several feet from the grill, but the officer commented that the grill was far enough away that it could not have been mistaken for trash.

Horsley was arrested that day and remains held at the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center as of Wednesday. No bond has been set for his release.
