(Indianapolis, Ind.) – A former Franklin County reserve deputy has been sentenced after pleading guilty to child exploitation charges.

Derek Walton, 31, of Liberty, was found in August 2013 to be distributing child pornography online through an AOL email account, according to the U.S. Attorneys office. He also had a hidden camera in his home containing images of an underage girl. A USB drive containing images was hidden behind his bedroom mirror.

Walton reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in April to plead guilty to two counts of Child Exploitation.

Appearing in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis for his sentencing Thursday, Walton was ordered by a federal judge to serve 16 years in prison. He had faced the possibility of up to 60 years. Federal law will require him to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he can be released from prison.

Walton must also pay a $5,000 fine and go on lifetime supervised release.

At the time of his arrest, Walton was working  as a jail officer and reserve deputy for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department since 2004. He previously worked for the Union County Sheriff’s, Richmond Police, and Laurel Police departments. Walton lost a bid for Union County sheriff in 2010.
