Press release from Ivy Tech Community College Southeast

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Ivy Tech Community College Southeast and the Dearborn Community Foundation are partnering to provide a week of fun-based learning for local 5th, 6th and 7th grade students.  The programs will be held at Ivy Tech’s Riverfront Campus, 50 Walnut Street, Lawrenceburg.

Activities will be held June 11, 2012 through June 15, 2012 with each day providing a different learning opportunity for the participants to discover Lawrenceburg and, more importantly, for each to realize his or her self worth.  Ivy Tech faculty, staff and community resource specialists will conduct events intended to motive the pre-teens to pursue self improvement, to remain in school, and to excel in academics and in life.  Other goals are to boost the self-esteem of the youths and to provide participants with positive values, social competencies, and with a commitment to learning.

Opening day activities will include music, journaling, literary events, public speaking and crafts.  The second day will be guided by individual strengths with personality type discussions using Strengths Quest, a web-based assessment tool that provides middle school students with self-discovery and strengths assessment.  Memory enhancement, visual illusions, behavior modifications, social Psychology, and conformity will also be addressed.

The third day will be devoted to science, technology, engineering, and math.  Activities will include exploring computer-based communications tools, Google Earth, inventions, logic puzzles, and various self-improvement games.  Another day will focus on health, nutrition and fitness.  Holistic wellness activities will include a team session at the Community Center, food pyramid/plate investigations, beginning gardening, healthy kitchen crafts and experiments, and a fitness routine.

The week will culminate with a 5th day visit the public library, the Vance-Tousey House and the log cabin, geo-caching, and treasure hunts and will end with a cook-out and an awards ceremony.

Because of the Dearborn Community Foundation’s involvement the participant fee for the week-long program is only $20.00.  The fee will be waived for students currently taking part in the free/reduced lunch program at his/her school.  Lunch will be provided daily.  However, parents/guardians must provide transportation to and from the Ivy Tech campus.

In order to be eligible to participate in the fun-based learning experience students must be a Dearborn County resident and currently in the 5th, 6th, or 7th grade and going into the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall.  Maximum enrollment is 100 students.  Applications are available at www.ivytech.edu/southeast/event.  For more information or to obtain a paper application contact Judy Anderson, 537-4010, ext. 5260 or Margaret Stewart, 537-4010, ext. 5240, or email janderson223@ivytech.edu or mstewart@ivytech.edu.
