(Batesville, Ind.) – They are only available once a year just before Presidents Day.
Schmidt’s Bakery in Batesville is having its annual cherry thing-a-ling sale. It starts today and runs through Monday – or until their supply runs out.
Cherry thing-a-lings have been a tradition for the family-owned bakery for more than 50 years. This year, baker Bertie Schmidt plans to produce more than 50,000 .
The one-of-a-kind fried treats are popular not just in Batesville, but people call in their shipping orders from around the country each Presidents Day weekend. Each cherry thing-a-ling is $1.25, or $15 a dozen.
Why does the bakery use cherries and only sell them on Presidents Day? It hearkens to the folk tale that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree as a child.
