(Aurora, Ind.) – An annual effort to pick up trash and debris from the banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries will happen this weekend.

Each June for the past 24 years, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission has organized the River Sweep. On Saturday, June 21, thousands of volunteers in communities along the river participate in the cleanup effort stretching 3,000 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cairo, Illinois.

ORSANCO says the cleanup nets more than 7,000 tons of trash each year. The items found range from non-biodegradable plastic bags to old rubber tires to refrigerators.

It’s free to help and volunteers will receive a free River Sweep t-shirt. Those giving their time are asked to wear old, comfortable clothes and close-toed shoes or boots they do not mind getting dirty. Trash bags and a limited number of gloved will be provided at each gathering site, but volunteers should bring their own gloves if possible.

More information and answers to frequently asked questions can be found on ORSANCO’s website, www.orsanco.org/river-sweep.
