Indiana gubernatorial candidate Rex Bell suffered a minor stroke Wednesday.

Bell, who is running as a longshot Libertarian, was being interviewed at the Richmond Palladium-Item newspaper’s offices when he fell ill. He was taken to Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, then later transferred to a Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for more testing.

Bell’s campaign said Thursday morning he remains in the hospital, but has been conscious and making jokes with doctors and nurses.

“He is fully aware and coherent, communicating as normal. He is expected a full recovery and to be released soon,” a statement from the campaign said.

Bell faces Republican Eric Holcomb and Democrat John Gregg in the race for Indiana governor. Holcomb issued a statement after hearing the news last night.

“I learned this evening that Rex Bell was taken to the emergency room. No other details have been provided, but I know I speak for Hoosiers everywhere when I say that Janet and I will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers,” Holcomb said.

Bell’s campaign said he and his family are touched by the outpouring of support, and they wish to thank Hoosiers for their thoughts, prayers, and kind words.

“We continue to ask that the family be allowed to focus on Mr. Bell’s health and a speedy recovery.”
