JCD Memorializing Student With New Scholarship
(Osgood, Ind.) – Former teammates and coaches of Jac-Cen-Del High School student Emily Huntington are turning tragedy into something positive.
Huntington died in a car crash in Ripley County December 30. The 18-year-old senior was the leading scorer on the Lady Eagles basketball team.
The school will establish the “Live Laugh Learn” Scholarship in her memory.
“With the passing of Emily Huntington, these have been dark days for the JCD community and school. I would like to see some positive light emerge from this darkness and therefore we are trying to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Emily,” said Jac-Cen-Del girls basketball coach Scott Smith.
A goal of raising $10,000 has been set to ensure the scholarship can last for years to come.
One of the first fundraising efforts will take place on Senior Night, the last Jac-Cen-Del girls home game of the regular season January 31. It’s being called “Pack the Gym for Em Night.”
There will be a pregame chili supper, with proceeds going towards the scholarship.
“Between businesses, individuals, and the fund raiser, this is a goal we can meet and preserve something good from this tragedy,” Smith said.
Smith said the school also plans to use the game as an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. Texting was a key factor in the crash that killed Huntington, Indiana State Police said.
Anyone interested in making a donation for the “Live Laugh Learn” Scholarship fund in Emily’s honor can do so by sending checks made out to the “Jac-Cen-Del Scholarship Foundation – LLL Fund,” Jac-Cen-Del High School, 4568 US 421, Osgood, Indiana 47037.
