(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Kelcey Mucker is regarded as one of the best athletes to ever play at Lawrenceburg High School.
It surprised none who saw him play basketball, baseball, or football as a Tiger when the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday that Mucker is among 18 players on the hall’s 2018 Men’s Silver Anniversary Team.
“I was surprised. Honored,” Mucker told Eagle Country 99.3 by phone from his Baton Rouge, Louisiana home Tuesday. He had first been informed of the honor a couple weeks earlier.
Kelcey Mucker graduated from LHS in 1993 after starring in basketball, football, and baseball.
“That was four years of pure fun,” he recalled. “It was basketball, baseball as well. Basketball has always been my love. It still is, but I’ve been all baseball since then.”
He made the Indiana Basketball All-Stars his junior season in 1992. That year, he helped Lawrenceburg to a regional championship in the pre-class basketball era – his favorite memory as a Tiger.
Mucker acknowledged his God-given athletic ability and willingness to be a team player for making him a hall of famer.
“I tried to do anything I could to help us win… But I remember the early days when everybody had to tell me to shoot,” he laughed.
The 42-year-old thanks the family, friends, teammates and coaches who helped him during his high school career.
After high school, Mucker was drafted in the first round of the 1993 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He played seven minor league seasons as an outfielder before retiring in 1999.
Since then, Mucker has been working as a scout in the southeastern United States for the Oakland Athletics. He’s been with the MLB organization for 18 years.
He says he still makes in back to Lawrenceburg to visit with friends and family on occasion. He came last year for a reunion with his 1992 regional team teammates.
Mucker and the 17 other 2018 Silver Anniversary Team members will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle on March 21, 2018. He hopes to make the ceremony.
Former Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Cincinnati Reds third baseman and Jasper High School graduate Scott Rolen, who played with Mucker on the 1992 Indiana All-Stars, is among the other honorees.
