(Sparta, Ky.) – Kentucky 35 in Gallatin County will be closed for several weeks while crews revamp the highway to handle traffic at the Kentucky Speedway.

During last July’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the track in Sparta, there were huge traffic jams. A lot of the problem lied with a lack of parking spaces, but also Kentucky 35 not being large enough to handle the flow.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is installing a pedestrian tunnel beneath Kentucky 35 at the track as a new 10,000 space parking lot goes in across the highway. Sunesis Contruction of West Chester, Ohio, the company contracted to make the road improvements, will also widen the highway to seven lanes.

The highway closed at the speedway this week. Until the $3.7 million upgrading project wraps up in March, drivers will have to take a detour around Kentucky 35.

The second annual Sprint Cup Quaker State 400 will be held June 28. You can hear the race live on Eagle 99.3, the tri-state’s home for NASCAR.
