(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – The cities of Lawrenceburg and Aurora are partnering to create a port authority.

The joint port authority will oversee projects on the riverfronts and railroads.

Aurora passed the ordinance in August, doing away with the Aurora Port Authority. Lawrenceburg’s city council voted to pass the joint ordinance on September 16.

The port authority will be governed by a board of nine people. Those members are the mayors of both cities, three appointments by each mayor, and one appointment from the Dearborn County Commissioners.

Lawrenceburg city attorney Leslie Votaw said the port authority may recommend a tax, but cannot levy a tax, according to draft minutes of the September 16 city council meeting.
