(Union, Ky.) – Boone County authorities are investigating the death of a man whose pickup truck apparently slid off an icy bridge and into a creek.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to check on the welfare of Walter Boyd, 75, at his home on the 12000 block of Big Oak Road in Union. Nobody had heard from Boyd since 10:00 a.m.

Deputies found Boyd’s house open, but nobody was around.

Soon afterwards, Boyd was found dead in his pickup truck, which was discovered upside down in a creek on the property.

“Speculation from those who knew Mr. Boyd was that he drove out to get his mail due to the inclement weather and his truck slid off of the bridge that crosses the creek,” said Boone County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tom Scheben.

Boyd’s cause of death is still under investigation. Scheben said the death appears at first glance to be a very unfortunate accident.
