(Undated) – A new poll shows Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock with his first lead ever in the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

Mourdock is trying to unseat longtime senator and fellow GOP member Richard Lugar in Indiana’s May 8 primary.

A new poll released by Citizens United on Thursday gives Mourdock a 44 to 39 percent lead over Lugar.

Mourdock led among Republican voters identifying themselves as tea party conservatives 63 to 24 percent. However, Lugar carried similar favor among moderate voters, 61 to 27 percent.

The poll has a margin of error of about four percent.
