Manu U. Nair

(Washington, D.C.) – A fifth grader from Shirley Mann Elementary School in Boone County has seen his run at the Scripps National Spelling Bee come to an end.

Eleven-year-old Manu Nair, of Union, was eliminated from the competition Wednesday.  While he did score both his words in the second and third oral rounds correct – “weir” and “metier” – He did not score enough points in the first round written test to make it to Thursday’s semifinals in Washington, D.C.

According to his bio, Manu is an honor roll student, school ambassador and member of the school academic team, which placed first in the district competition. He hopes to someday become a biologist or professional basketball player.

Five Ohio students, one Hoosier, and one from Kentucky advanced to the nationally-televised event.
