OCCF Awards $27K In Grants

(Ohio County, Ind.) – The Ohio County Community Foundation recently awarded a total of $27,759.36 in Community Grants during the first grant cycle of 2012. The grants were awarded to local, non-profit organizations whose projects and programs benefit Ohio County. Each applicant could request up to $5,000. The grants were funded from the distributions of the unrestricted endowment funds of the Ohio County Today & Tomorrow Endowment Fund. Portions of the some of the grants were funded from an Anonymous Donor Endowment Fund. The funds were established to provide charitable grants to meet the pressing needs in Ohio County.
The following non-profit organizations were awarded a Community Grant:
The Voices of Indiana, Limited was awarded $1,250 to provide tuition scholarships for Ohio County Youth to participate in the Young Voices programs.
The Ohio County Public Library was awarded $4,021 to purchase two new copy machines. One copier will be placed in the Ohio County Public Library building for staff use and one will be placed in the Carnegie building to allow visitors to make copies while doing research.
The Rising Sun Cemetery Association was awarded $805 to purchase a Getzen Field Trumpet to play Taps during burials for veterans upon family requests. This grant was funded entirely by an Anonymous Donor Endowment Fund.
The Indiana State Police South E.R.T. was awarded $3,483.36 to purchase tactical equipment to better protect residents in the event of an emergency.
The Child Evangelism Fellowship, Inc. was awarded $2,400 toward the funding of the Good News Club in Ohio County.
The City of Rising Sun for the Navy Bean Fall Festival was awarded $4,800 to present two programs at the 2012 Navy Bean Fall Festival; the ORSANCO “Life Below the Waterline Mobile Aquarium” will display live river fish and educational information about the Ohio River and Radio Disney Live will broadcast live music for teens and tweens with interactive games and activities. A portion of the ORSANCO Live Aquarium will be funded by an Anonymous Donor Endowment Fund.
The Aberdeen United Methodist Preschool was awarded $3,000 to purchase new teaching tables, chairs, cubbies, classroom carpet, storage shelf and a paper drying rack for the preschool. A portion of this grant was funded by an Anonymous Donor Endowment Fund.
The Learning Tree of Ohio County Inc. was awarded $5,000 to provide back to school supplies, haircuts, eye exams, dental care and Book Fair coupons to needy Ohio County students.
The Rising Sun Church of Christ Christian Outreach Food Pantry was awarded $3,000 to purchase food and toiletries to be distributed to needy Ohio County families.
The mission of the Ohio County Community Foundation (OCCF) is to build, manage and distribute a lasting source of charitable funds for Ohio County. OCCF fulfills this mission by assisting donors to establish endowments that provide charitable funds for Ohio County. Only the interests from the funds are distributed in the form of grants. This allows the funds to grow indefinitely to increase the capacity for the funds to further impact the community through future grant distributions. Grants are awarded to non-profit organizations whose programs and projects benefit the residents of Ohio County, in the areas of Community Development, Education, Scholarships, Health, Human Services and Cultural Affairs.
