Parris Up For All-USA Wrestler Of The Year
By Travis Thayer
Mason Parris stands atop the podium after winning his fourth-straight semi-state title this past weekend in New Castle.
(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Mason Parris has presumably been the best wrestler in the state of Indiana for the better part of three years, but he could soon be named the best in the nation.
The Lawrenceburg high school senior is one of 10 mid-season candidates for the 2017-18 American Family Insurance All-USA Wrestler of the Year, reports the USA Today. More candidates could be added at a later date.
Parris has been stellar this year with a 43-0 record. He has yet to allow an opponent to make it through a full six-minute match. Parris will vie for a third-straight IHSAA Wrestling State Championship at 220 pounds this weekend at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Tigers star currently holds a 148-match winning streak.
To date, Parris leads the fan voting for All-USA Wrestler of the Year with 41.8 percent of the vote.
Other notable candidates include Gable Steveson of Apple Valley, Minnesota, who won the award last year.
The honor will be determined in April after state championships and national events. The winner will be selected by Earl Smith of OpenMat.
