Phone Scam Claims To Be IRS
By Mike Perleberg
(Dearborn County, Ind.) – Local police are warning area residents about a telephone scam that’s making the rounds.
Dearborn County Sheriff Mike Kreinhop says his office has received multiple reports about the scam in which the caller claims to be with the Internal Revenue Service and that the would-be victim owes thousands of dollars in back taxes.
Under the threat of going to jail, the caller tells the recipient to go to Walmart and purchase a money card and place a certain amount of funds on that card. The person is given a number to call back and provide the card number, which the scammer likely uses to take the money and never be heard from again.
“Don’t fall for this scam,” Kreinhop said. “It’s not surprising they would try something like this during tax season.”
The sheriff says he does not believe any local victims have fallen for the scam yet.
