(Batesville, Ind.) – An Oldenburg couple is accused of taking a three-year-old child along for a scrap metal theft from a public utility.

Workers at the Batesville Waste Water Treatment Plant told police they witnessed a male and female stealing scrap from behind the property fence at the plant at around 12:20 p.m. Monday. When one of the workers approached the couple, they fled in their vehicle.

A worker notified police and followed the suspects, who were subsequently apprehended in the parking lot of the New Point Hotel on State Road 46. Items stolen from the treatment plant were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, said Batesville Chief of Police Stan Holt.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Sarah Harrison, 24, and the passenger as Omar Richardson, 23.

Also in the vehicle was a 3 year-old child, who was released to a family member.

Both Harrison and Richardson were incarcerated at the Franklin County Jail in Brookville on preliminary charges of Theft (Class D felony). Holt said Harrison may also face charges of Neglect of a Dependent (Class D felony).
