(Burlington, Ky.) – Boone County deputies had a sneaking suspicion that a woman was lying about who stole a purse from a car.

On Tuesday evening, Ashley Ellis reported to employees of Bright Future Preschool on Rogers Lane that she had seen a suspicious man in the school’s parking lot.

When the employees went out to check the parking lot, one woman discovered that her purse was missing from her parked car.

“Boone County Sheriff’s deputy Tyler Brockman was summoned to investigate and when he got to interviewing Ashley he could tell she was lying,” sheriff’s office spokesman Tom Scheben said.

Upon further questioning, Ellis admitted to stealing the purse and discarding its contents in a sewer on Millstream Lane nearly one mile away. Brockman was able to recover the purse from the sewer.

Ellis, 21, of Burlington was charged with Theft by unlawful taking over $500 (Class D felony) and Criminal littering for dumping the stolen items in the sewer.
