(Rising Sun, Ind.) – The action will be wet and wild in Rising Sun this weekend.
The 2nd Annual Rising Sun Regatta happens Saturday and Sunday.
The city – home to the famed “Hoosier Boy” boat from the early days of powerboat racing, still on display at the Ohio County Historical Museum – hosted the Powerboat Nationals in 2013 when neighboring Aurora’s Lesko Park was closed for road construction by INDOT. The racing organization was so impressed, they decided to bring the event to Rising Sun for a second year.
“I don’t know that we stole it (from Aurora), but (Powerboat Nationals) seemed to like the riverfront. It was an easy fit for the event,” says Sherri Timms, Rising Sun Tourism director.
Powerboat Nationals’ races will fill the weekend. The boats feature some of the most powerful outboard engines in water racing and make some of the fastest turns of any vehicle. Such a boat can go zero to 60 MPH in a matter of six seconds. A 180 degree turn can create a force of up to 5 Gs.
Vintage hydroplanes with the Ohio Valley Vintage Hydroplane Association will also appear at the regatta.
Regatta visitors will also enjoy 36 vendors selling food, beverages, arts, and crafts. A movie will be shown downtown on Saturday night.
