(Sunman, Ind.) – A new clerk-treasurer will likely be needed in Sunman following the current office holder’s criminal conviction.

On November 1, Sunman Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Schneider pleaded guilty to a charge of Public Official Misconduct and was sentenced to one year on probation. She was charged for using the town credit card to pay personal expenses two years ago.

Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel tells Eagle 99.3 the Indiana Secretary of State has weighed in on Schneider’s status as clerk-treasurer – a position she has held for 23 years.

“According to the Indiana Code it appears that she cannot remain in office following her recent conviction,” Hertel said Wednesday.

The Ripley County Republican Party would have to select a replacement clerk-treasurer through a caucus. No plans for that have been announced yet.

Schneider, 55, had paid back the $3,600 she used on the town credit card at the time of her arrest in December 2012.
