(Evansville, Ind.) – The City of Rising Sun has claimed a nice award for its newly renovated riverfront.

The organization Accelerate Indiana Municipalities has named Rising Sun its 2017 Placemaking Award winner. Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom and other city officials received the award at AIM’s Ideas Summit in Evansville yesterday.

The award specifically recognizes the city’s riverfront revitalization project. The multi-year project was completed in 2016. It focused on protecting the riverbank, providing access to the river and diversifying the economic base through tourism.

“Maximizing the use of existing assets and building upon strengths is what good placemaking is all about. The City of Rising Sun is a true leader in this movement and I’m excited for them to receive the acknowledgement they deserve,” said AIM CEO Matt Greller.

Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom said the city is honored to have received the award.

“Our Riverfront Revitalization Project spanned several years and quite a few city administrations. We’re extremely grateful to have our peers recognize all the hard work that has went into our riverfront,” he added.

Rising Sun was not the only local city to win an award from AIM. The City of Aurora was bestowed with the Municipal Innovation Award for its façade improvement matching grant program. The program was introduced in 2016, helping fund $200,000 worth of improvements to 18 downtown buildings.

A panel of nine qualified judges selected this year’s award winners from a competitive field of nominees from around the state.
