(Rising Sun, Ind.) – A hardware store in Rising Sun was destroyed by an early morning fire.

Flames broke out in the rear of Valley Supply on State Road 262 at around 1:00 a.m. Monday. Firefighters responded in about six minutes, but the fire had apparently already been burning for some time.

Due to various chemicals and materials inside the hardware store, it took firefighters about 90 minutes to get the flames under control, according to Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kevin Armstrong. Neighbors reported hearing explosions as what were assumed to be bottles, cans of paint, and spray cans exploded.

Armstrong says the interior of the store appears to be a total loss, but the exterior might be salvaged. It is likely that the store owned by Gary and Judy Copeland will be closed for some time.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office is coming later Monday to help determine what sparked the fire at Valley Supply.

No injuries were reported in the fire. Armstrong said that one firefighter was treated for exhaustion.

In addition to Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department, other agencies on the scene included Aurora and East Enterprise fire departments, Rising Sun Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Ohio County Life Squad, Ohio County Sheriff’s Department, Rising Sun Police Department, and Rising Sun Utilities.
