(Aurora, Ind.) – This weekend, volunteers will help clean more than 3,000 miles of shoreline on the Ohio River from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the Mississippi River.

The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission’s annual River Sweep takes place on Saturday, June 16. It’s the 23rd year for the cleanup, with last year’s effort netting about 20,000 tons of trash and debris.

“The Ohio River Sweep is very important because for a few hours on one day volunteers can help make a difference in the appearance of this great natural resource,” said Jeanne Ison, Project Director with ORSANCO.  “The Sweep has grown so much in the past few years, we’ve been able to expand the project to tributaries and feeder streams of the Ohio River.”

Each volunteer will receive a free T-shirt.

More information on River Sweep can be found at ORSANCO’s website, www.orsanco.org/river-sweep.
