SR 56 Closes For 14 Hours Monday Night
By Mike Perleberg
(Ohio County, Ind.) – Here’s a friendly reminder to local motorists: State Road 56 in Ohio County will be closed overnight Monday into Tuesday.
INDOT contracted crews will shut down SR 56 at Thuermer Hollow Road – located between Aurora and Rising Sun – starting at 7:00 p.m. Monday. The closure for all traffic will last for 14 hours until about 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.
The closure is necessary so crews can implement a traffic shift in the construction zone. It’s part of the $3.7 million construction project to raise that portion of SR 56 by as much as 14 feet in order to improve sight distance and safety for drivers by moderating the curve at Thuermer Hollow Road.
The project, which is expect to be completed in November, will also widen SR 56 to two 12 foot lanes with shoulders. Care is being taken to replicate the stream bed by reusing river rock, sand and soil from the bottom of the existing creek.
Also this week, Thuermer Hollow Road will be closing to traffic at the construction site until the project is completed in November. A new three-sided box culvert will carry Thuermer Hollow Road’s new alignment over the creek.
Even following SR 56’s reopening, ten-foot width restrictions remain in effect on the highway. Trucks with wide loads are being routed around the construction zone via sSR 129 and U.S. 50.
